We are a place for all seasons! The majestic surroundings of the scenic Black Mountain Recreation Area is the home of The Chateau North Restaurant & Lodge, a complete all-year recreation area deep in the beautiful Black Mountain Forest. Come and explore "Woods and Water" with us in the area's best-kept secret!

BLACK MOUNTAIN NORDIC CLASSIC SKI RACE

We were the host for this year's annual Black Mountain Nordic Classic ski race (part of the Michigan Cup Series) held in March that started and ended at our restaurant. It is a challenging rollercoaster ride of plentiful hills in the expansively groomed 30 kilometer loop around the perimeter of the Black Mountain Recreation area for entrants aged 13 and up. There is a smaller 10 km skate only loop which offers no awards for completion. The race is sponsored by the Presque Isle County Tourism Council. SLEDDING!!

Chateau North has the greatest sledding hill around! With a nice long slope, plenty of space to have a good time, and in direct view of the dining room! Come have a great time on our hill, then warm up inside with our luscious hot chocolate and a bite to eat. You just can't beat it!

 

FISHING and BOATING
East Twin Trout Lake, where Chateau North is located, is a designated trout lake. Black Lake is just a quick 5 mile trip away, is well known for its walleye, pike, and bass. Perch, walleye, trout, or bass and our 50,000 acres of lakes and 80 miles of rivers and streams are sure to please eager fishing enthusiasts as well. Don't forget about ice fishing! Boating and canoeing in Northern Michigan's Inland Waterway is a unique adventure sure to please any boating enthusiast. This 28-mile route begins in Cheboygan on the Cheboygan River and moves into Mullett Lake, the Indian River, Burt Lake, Crooked River, and then Crooked and Pickerel Lakes. An abundance of fish and wildlife will surely make it worth the trip!

SNOWMOBILING
At its best!
Chateau North is located on the main trail with access to interconnected trails throughout the State. The Chateau North offers fine, casual dining and cocktails, plus gasoline and lodging facilities. Snowmobiles are available for rent. Snowmobilers come back to the Cheboygan area year after year because of more than 500 miles of groomed trails providing days of delightful adventures. OFF-ROAD ADVENTURING
Located in the Black Mountain Recreation Area, the Black Lake Scramble Area is one of five scramble areas in Michigan, offering immediate access to miles of trails for off road vehicle enthusiasts. Michigan's public Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) trail/route system is open to all Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) registered and licensed with the Secretary of State are allowed to ride in Michigan’s scramble areas. The system is the only legal place to ride non-Secretary of State licensed ORVs on public lands other than frozen waters in Michigan's lower peninsula.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
A great sport for all; mountain biking is allowed on all trails, so bring your bike and gear! Fishweb.com  has a great map for regional trails.

SKIING
Imagine glistening white snow, clear blue skies, and strapping on the cross country skis or the snow shoes to head out into miles and miles of trails. The Black Mountain Recreation Area has groomed and ungroomed trails for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers.

There are also five downhill ski resorts within a one-hour drive of the Chateau North! Come have plentiful adventures in the outdoors at its finest with 30 miles of cross country skiing ranging from beginner to expert pathways. Michigan skiing maps can be found here.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURING
Those who enjoy outdoor recreation take pleasure from the ever-changing seasons in our region. Spring brings the finest mushroom hunting around! Fall in the Cheboygan area is truly fabulous. Dfferent kaleidoscopes of color turn the countryside into a palette of fall's blazing color. Bird watchers enjoy osprey, eagles, and an amazing assortment of other bird life. Photography, hunting for grouse, horseback riding on the trails, berry picking, and morel mushroom hunting are among numerous activities Black Mountian Recreation Area has to offer.
